Scientific NameCommon NameSummary
Tonicella lineataLined chitonThis pretty and common chiton is similar to Blue-lined chiton (Tonicella undocaerulea), except that when blue lines are present on the headplate, they are usually lined with brown and not waved, whereas in Blue-lined chiton (Tonicella undocaerulea) they are usually waved, and not lined with brown.
Tonicella undocaeruleaBlue-lined chitonThis beautiful species has unique blue waves on the dorsal plates. Unlike Tonicella lineata, this species tends to be orange or pink, and usually has blue lines on all its plates. To be more certain of your identification, look closely at the head plate: T. lineata almost always has the concentric lines on the headplate bordered by dark brown lines, while in T. undocaerulea they are not. Also, the lines on the headplate of T. undocaerulea are strongly zigzagged, this is uncommon in T. lineata.
Tonicella venustaLovely ChitonThis species is often common but easily overlooked in the low intertidal or shallow subtidal. It is nearly always seen on coralline algae. The small size (2 cm or less) and white flecks and white stripes on the girdle help to distinguish this species.
