Summary This species is our most common intertidal hermit crab. It is quickly identified by its white knees and general dark, hairy appearance, its habit of using a rather small shell (which is part of the first stage of de-specialization from the hermit crab form to the king crab form), and its mid-intertidal, calm-water habitat.
