Summary This species, like other salps, has two foThis species, like other salps, has two forms: in one stage, it is a solitary animal which asexually produces a long chain of "aggregate-form" salps which swim as chains of individuals as if they formed one large organism, and reproduce sexually. Salps tend to be noticed when they die-off and are found floating everywhere, or when they come up on trollers' lines. This salp is somewhat larger than ''Salpa fusiformis.'' However, there may be some disagreement as to whether at least some ''Salpa maxima'' specimens actually fall under ''[[Salpa fusiformia]]'', which normally measures less than 5cm without its projections. More importantly, in this species unlike in ''S. fusiformis'', muscles 4 and 5 are connected.siformis'', muscles 4 and 5 are connected.  +
