Semibalanus balanoides
From Natural History of Southeast Alaska
Semibalanus balanoides: This barnacle is typically found at the same tidal elevations as the rockweed Fucus gardneri, and often higher. It is more tolerant of freshwater intrusion than its lookalike species, the acorn barnacle Balanus glandula. Two ways to tell this species apart from B. glandula is by looking at the plates at either end of the "volcano." In this species, they are of very different sizes, whereas in the acorn barnacle they are of similar size. The second way is to look at the crosswise suture in the "hatch-door" plates; in this species it is lobed, whereas in B. glandula it is straight.
