Southeastern Alaska Distribution: Throughout.
Habitat: Common in a variety of habitats. In humid canyons, on cliffs, on the banks of shaded streams and rivers, sometimes on cutbanks, on rocks, in crevices, on mineral soils. In wet to mesic sites, from sea level to the subalpine.
Comments: Commonly with sporophytes. Every commentator on this species has noted its variability in habitat, morphology, and microscopic characters. The species is one of the commonest mosses in southeastern Alaska.
