Dendraster excentricusExcentric sand dollarThe sand dollar is found on sandy beaches, mostly on the outer coast. Its hair is actually a dense layer of tiny spines, which are used to bring food to the mouth. This species has been reported to populate sandy areas with hundreds of individuals per square meter. The only other Alaskan species, Echinarachnius parma, has a centrally located mouth and is only reported from areas west and north of southeast Alaska.
