Collected in boreal-temperate western North America; medulla often at least partly yellow:
P. holarctica: Upper medulla bright yellow; generally narrow-lobed with mostly marginal(to laminal) soralia and pseudisidia and more rarely phyllidia; lower pseudocyphellae abundant, in part becoming large and excavate near the marginal zone
P.citrina: Medulla white throughout; broad-lobed with mostly laminal soralia and yellow pseudisidia; lower pseudocyphellae absent in broad marginal zone
P. hawaiiensis: Upper medulla patchily pale yellow; narrow-lobed with mostly marginal soralia and pseudisidia; lower pseudocyphellae abundant, small
