Southeastern Alaska Distribution: See Map 88. Locally abundant in the “Wet Climate” zone.
Habitat: As strands among bryophytes in peatlands, sometimes as semi-pure colonies; occasionally as mats on peaty banks (especially near pools) in bogs. In British Columbia frequently forming extesnive red masses on damp cliff shelves in fens (Schofield, 1968b).
Comments: Fertile plants have not been seen in western North America. The species also occupies a quite different habitat in Fennoscandia; (Arnell, 1956) growing on more or less moist cliffs and on boulders in talus below cliffs. This species os one of the best indicators of a hyperoceanic climate.
