Worley's Map of Collection Records for Niphotrichum ericoides

Ian Worley

Southeastern Alaska Distribution: [as Rhacomitrium canescens var. ericoides] Widespread.Often abundant on exposed mineral soils, either acid or basic, on boulders, rocks, cliffs and outcrops. From sea level to the alpine. [as Rachomitrium canescens var. strictum] Previously only known from Hidden Glacier Inlet and Hubbard Glacier (Cardot and Theriot, 1902).
Habitat: [as Rhacomitrium canescens var. ericoides] Frequently with sporophytes. This is one of the most widespread species in the early successional stages after deglaciation, notably in Glacier Bay National Monument and adjacent to the Juneau Ice Field (Cooper, 1923b,c, 1931, 1939; Lawerence, 1953; Ugolini, 1966). All non-alpine plants of the species in southeastern Alaska are probably this variety. [as Rachomitrium canescens var. strictum] Locally abundant on rocks, mineral soils, and in tundra in the subalpine and alpine, rarely at lower elevations.
Comments: [as Rhacomitrium canescens var. ericoides] Frequently with sporophytes. This is one of the most widespread species in the early successional stages after deglaciation, notably in Glacier Bay National Monument and adjacent to the Juneau Ice Fieldd (Cooope, 1923b,c, 1931, 1939; Lawrence, 1953; Ugolini, 1966). All non-alpine plants of the species in southeastern Alaska are probably this variety. [as Rachomitrium canescens var. strictum] Not seen with sporophytes. I have followed Schofield's (1968a) choice of nomenclature for this variety.
