Habitat: In various habitats, though only abundant in areas of human disturbance. Usually on seepy soils, in sunny (rarely in deep shade) sites from sea level to the subalpine. Sperading over large areas after fires. Especially common in roadside ditches where extensive colonies may form.
Comments: The plants commonly produce sporophytes. The forms seen in southeastern Alaska show consideraable variation.
