From Natural History of Southeast Alaska
Family: Littorinidae
Group: Marine Invertebrate, Species
Scientific Name | Common Name | Summary |
---|---|---|
Littorina scutulata | Checkered periwinkle | This species lives so high in the intertidal that it breathes air and can drown if submerged for too long. |
Littorina sitkana | Sitka periwinkle | Abundant snail in the upper intertidal of low-energy coastlines, especially on sunny rocks without much algal growth. Littorina sitkana is sometimes so numerous as to obscure the rocks it occupies in search of algae to eat. This is a small, round, dark species, lower and rounder than Checkered periwinkle (Littorina scutulata) which one is most often found in Fucus beds and on mussels. |
