Hylocomium splendens

Step Moss (Hylocomium splendens): Probably the most easily recognized moss species in our area. The stair step growth pattern of the feather-like plants is unmistakable. Most common in forested areas.

Habitat: On forest soils, organic soils, decaying wood, rock outcrops, banks, canyon walls, cliffs, peatlands, meadows, roadcuts, alpine tundra, etc. From sea level to the alpine. In dry to moist (sometimes even in seeps) sites.
Comments: Occasionally fertile.
